In the summer of 1790, the first United States patent was granted to Samuel Hopkins of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for his invention that improved Pot ash and Pearl ash by a new Apparatus and Process. This accurate reproduction includes the signatures of George Washington and the Attorney General.
