A former slave that taught himself to read and write, Frederick Douglass is one of the most prominent and recognizable abolitionists and writers of the 19th century. "What to the Slave is the 4th of July?" the famous speech by Douglass from 1852 is completely reproduced here, also featuring Douglass's portrait.
